An experiment in belt buckles

I got a bit of a challenging custom order the other day, it was for a belt buckle almost twice the size of those I usually make.

To make things a bit more difficult, the finding was curved, making it hard to keep the type looking clean and lined up.

That being said, I think I did a pretty bang up job, I hope my customer likes it!

Newsies the musical – a custom order

ImageI’ve finally completed the custom order for the cast of “Newsies” the Disney musical now on broadway. i finally checked out the website and I have to say, it’s pretty cool watching a bunch of people on stage who are about to own a pair of my cufflinks.

They were just featured on The View, and you can check out to performance via the website.

Break a leg guys!

Upside Down, Left to Right

Upside Down, Left to Right

What a lovely surprise this morning to have been featured in a wonderful etsy treasury all about letterpress and inspired by a very cool documentary by Danny Cooke about letterpress. Enjoy!

iPad. vs. Vandercook.

We're not sure whether to feel very impressed, complemented, slightly horrified or some combination of the three. LetterMpress version 1.3.0 is now available on iPad with new type and art. iPad vs. Vandercook -- you decide.

I second the thoughts of Peach Farm Studio, although having been able to fool around with it, it's pretty fun.

Terrariums

I’m fascinated by terrariums, they are just the most awesome little worlds.

I know theyre kind of the new “hipster” thing, but I REALLY like them and figured I’d just go ahead and make some.

I’m lucky to live in an area where there are an abundance of antique malls. Tons of dealers in one place. So a few weeks ago I went to find some containers to make the terrariums in, got myself some moss, found a use for the bones I’d been collecting and made some little worlds. Here’s the results.

Hello 2012!

As sad as I usually am about goodbyes I’m happy to welcome 2012. (That is as long as the Mayan prophecies don’t come to pass with the destruction of the human race….)

We had a great time ringing in the new year with friends, and I’m ready for what comes next!

Posts have been scarce for the last month, but this holiday season came out of no where are slapped me upside the head!

Not that this is a bad thing, but between my surgery and the sales volume I was caught a bit off guard. It’s been a whirlwind of a month and after a bunch of great shows and making connections with lots of wonderful people, a short break and visits with both sides of the family I’m gearing up to start all over again.

I’ve been searching productivity blogs, making spread sheets, and planning out my every move for 2012.  Here’s to a productive, creative, successful and wonderful 2012!

The Pre-Vinylite Society

"Pre-Vinylite Society" by Josh Luke of Best Dressed Signs

Liya and I went to an amazing show at a small gallery above Orchard Skate Shop in Allston. It was curated by Josh of Best Dressed Signs (formerly of New Bohemia Signs which displayed an impressive amount of work in the show.) It was three rooms full of hand painted typographic goodness and Liya’s cousin of Minty Custom Signs had some pieces in it.

I have such an appreciation for hand painted signs, mainly because I’m no whiz with freehand.  The pieces in the show were amazing. It really is a type geeks dream. Josh Luke and Kenji Nakayama  gave a killer demo of hand lettering, pin striping and gilding. It was a long day (about 3 hours) but so worth it. If I had a little more ambition I might try some painting myself.

More info and photos from the opening last weekend can be seen here.

"Ocho Ochenta" by Greg Rubin of Minty Custom Signs

I’ve done my best to attribute the pieces to the artists correctly and link back where I could find websites, however if I’ve missed something or mis labeled something please let me know!
